It is important to realise now that the end of a series of treatments doesn’t necessarily mean that a problem will not reoccur at all. It is important to us at Total Health Osteopathy that we educate our Clientele and give them tools, ie, programs of flexibility and strengthening exercises for them to go away and continue the recovery process started, and make it much more of a sure thing that the same, or indeed other, injury’s do not occur.
We will look at why the injury happened in the first place and address the biomechanics of each patient to ensure that their work, habits, sports and hobbies are performed in such a way that they are most efficient, successful and pain free.
ART Active Release Technique
What is Active Release Technique (ART)?
ART is a patented, state of the art soft tissue system/movement based massage technique that treats problems with muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia and nerves. Headaches, back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, shin splints, shoulder pain, sciatica, plantar fascitis, knee problems, and tennis elbow are just a few of the many conditions that can be resolved quickly and permanently with ART. These conditions all have one important thing in common: they are often a result of overused muscles.
How do overuse conditions occur?
Overused muscles (and other soft tissues) change in three important ways:
- acute conditions (pulls, tears, collisions, etc),
- accumulation of small tears (micro-trauma)
- not getting enough oxygen (hypoxia).
Each of these factors can cause your body to produce tough, dense scar tissue in the affected area. This scar tissue binds up and ties down tissues that need to move freely. As scar tissue builds up, muscles become shorter and weaker, tension on tendons causes tendonitis, and nerves can become trapped. This can cause reduced range of motion, loss of strength, and pain. If a nerve is trapped you may also feel tingling, numbness, and weakness.
What is an ART treatment like?
Every ART session is actually a combination of examination and treatment. The ART provider uses his or her hands to evaluate the texture, tightness and movement of muscles, fascia, tendons, ligaments and nerves. Ab-normal tissues are treated by combining precisely directed tension with very specific patient movements.
These treatment protocols – over 500 specific moves – are unique to ART. They allow providers to identify and correct the specific problems that are affecting each individual patient. ART is not a cookie-cutter approach.
What is the history of Active Release Techniques?
ART has been developed, refined, and patented by P. Michael Leahy, DC, CCSP. Dr. Leahy noticed that his patients’ symptoms seemed to be related to changes in their soft tissue that could be felt by hand. By observing how muscles, fascia, tendons, ligaments and nerves responded to different types of work, Dr. Leahy was able to consistently resolve over 90% of his patients’ problems. He now teaches and certifies health care providers all over the world to use ART.
What is Biosignature?
Biosignature is a novel concept in the field of functional medicine and exercise science, developed by world-renowned strength coach Charles Poliquin. His theory is that where people store their body fat is an indication of their hormonal profile.
For example, the thickness of one’s umbilical skin fold is a reflection of one’s cortisol output. It is a direct reflec-tion of one’s stress levels and their ability to handle it. Biosignature determines the relationship between the levels of insulin, cortisol, thyroid, growth hormone, androgens and estrogens. Each corresponding body fat skin fold measurement is compared to normative data specific to male and female populations.
How does this help us here in London?
The relevance of this test for workers in the City and Canary Wharf are huge. Body fat percentage alone is great way to measure progress in peoples’ fitness and nutritional regimes. In addition to that, each Biosignature site, when red flagged, has proposed dietary plans and nutritional supplementation programs that modulate the fat storage patterns to enhance healthy body composition.
Why is our hormonal profile so important?
Hormones and our endocrine system are extremely important in complete health ….Our endocrine system helps maintain the steady state of our bodies. It controls our metabolism, growth and reproduction, and helps us adapt to stress and changes in our physical circumstances. It also regulates the concentrations of important substances in the blood, like glucose, calcium, sodium, potassium and water. Secreted by various endocrine glands throughout our body (and some by the neurons, or nerve cells, in our brains), our hormones act as chemical messengers. They are transported by our blood to target tissues, where they activate a change in some physiological activity.
Of particular importance here in our stressful lives is the Cortisol site. When people present with a high Umbilical reading it reflects ones cortisol output. If this is high, a simple, non-invasive test (saliva) will be sent to a lab where they determine if someone has a particularly high cortisol output or their level of Adrenal Fatigue. Adrenal fatigue, Adrenal Hypofunction or hypoadrenia describes the adrenal glands functioning below the necessary level. With each increment of decreased adrenal function, every organ and system in the body is profoundly affected and this will decrease performance at work and play!
Cortisol has some positive affects like quick bursts of energy for survival reasons, heightened memory functions, increased immunity in bursts, lower sensitivity to pain and it helps maintain homeostasis in the body.
Our high-stress culture causes so much cortisol to be produced that it causes chronic stress. Issues like commuting, work stress, exercises, personal/marital stress, children and health. High sugar diets, drinking too much alcohol and smoking all add to internal stressors of the body.
The detrimental affects that this causes include impaired cognitive performance, suppressed thyroid function, blood sugar imbalances such as hyperglycemia, decreased bone density, decrease in muscle tissue, higher blood pressure, lowered immunity and inflammatory responses in the body and, the big one …. increased ab-dominal fat, which is associated with a greater amount of health problems than fat deposited in other areas of the body. Some of the health problems associated with increased stomach fat are heart attacks, strokes, the development of , higher levels of “bad” cholesterol (LDL) and lower levels of “good” cholesterol (HDL), which can lead to other health problems!
Also of great importance are the readings that tell us about Insulin sensitivity. Now the skinfold measured underneath the shoulder blade indicates a person genetic carbohydrate tolerance and has been medically recognized as a predictor of heart disease and then reading over the crest of the hip is correlated to carbohydrate intake. Ones ability to deal with carbohydrates is described as their insulin resistance and it’s monitoring and control can prevent the onset of Syndrome X (overweight, high blood pressure, increased blood lipids etc), Diabetes, Hypoglycemia and Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome.
Also of great importance here in the UK and Europe in general are sex hormones.
Firstly, the level of testosterone that people have can be determined in the biosignature by the tricep reading and the pectoral reading (for it’s aromatisation/use). Typically understood for its presentation of male character-isics it most importantly is essential in building muscle mass and not storing fat, typical of man but also needed by us ladies. Yes, we have and need testosterone too and very typically do not have enough.
Symptoms of a “deficiency” or loss of testosterone, in women, can include a loss of vital energy and feeling of “well-being”and a loss of familiar levels of sexual libido. Other impacts may include a “flatness” of mood, dry skin, brittle scalp hair, and loss of muscle tone and strength. It’s understood that testosterone can play a role in curbing osteopo-rosis by helping maintain the density of our bones. And if that wasn’t enough, it can influence our cognitive func-tion as well.
A high skin-fold measurement on the thigh indicates a high level of Oestrogen. Possible in both Men and Wom-en and is particularly common in Europe due to the high amount present in our water. Oestrogen in high levels has several health complications. Increased HDL, triglyceridee, fat deposition and decreased LDL, Salt and wa-ter retention, reduce bowel motility and about 80% of breast cancers, once established, rely on supplies of the hormone Oestrogen to grow: they are known as hormone-sensitive or hormone-receptor-positive cancers. Suppression of production in the body of estrogen is a treatment for these cancers.
Finally, but very briefly as are generally not as common, other hormone profiles covered are growth hormone and thyroid health. Thyroid hormones are essential to proper development and differentiation of all cells of the human body. These hormones also regulate protein, fat, and carbohydrate metabolism, affecting how human cells use energetic compounds. Growth hormone increases muscle mass, calcium retention and protein synthesis. It also promotes liver glucogenesis (generation of glucose from non sugar carbon substrates), maintains the pancreas’ islets and stimulates the immune system.
